Choice of antenna connector

I am building a Calypso-based GSM development board - like a phone, but
no LCD or keypad initially, and on a free form factor bare board. It's
an intermediate step, I plan on turning it into a complete phone at a
later stage.
Question: what connector should I put on the board for the GSM antenna?
SMA? 50 ohm? Which gender? Would anyone happen to know what is the
"canonical" RF connector type for development boards of this kind?

Michael,
SMA-F (not RP-SMA) is the standard connector for small GSM antennas in
my personal experience.

Female on the board, male on the connected antenna, or the other way
around? My own research suggests the former, but please correct me if
I'm wrong.

SMA-Female on the board.

Thanks, I'll put that in my design.

So I'll be putting a female SMA for the antenna connector on the
Calypso GSM board I'm building, as advised by Alexander Chemeris on
this list and as seen in TI's Leonardo board schematics.
Follow-up question: which would be more convenient for users, an
upright SMA that sticks out from the board (axis perpendicular to the
PCB) or a right angle connector with the axis parallel to the board?
I envision the board as being of the same general size and shape as
the ones inside Mot C1xx / Pirelli DP-L10 / etc, with the power, USB
and analog audio connectors and the SIM socket on one end, the RF
shieldcan and antenna connector at the other end, and the baseband
shieldcan in the middle.
